Central Laundries
Experience
Central Laundries
This is our fastest growth segment, with entrepreneurs opening a central laundry to service multiple customers, with many offering services to the booming Air B&B market.
With increasing labour costs, businesses are increasingly outsourcing their laundry to automated facilities.
Production
Central Laundries
On premise laundries in New Zealand in general don’t process more than 1 ton per shift, central laundries on the other hand will process this volume from multiple facilities, so we categorise central laundries per below.
Small
250KG per hour or 2 tons per shift
Customer owned goods & considering linen rental
Manually loading washers / dryers
Medium
500KG per hour or 4 tons per shift
Linen rental
Manually loading washers / dryers
Large
Above 1000KG per hour or 8 tons per shift
Linen rental
Automatically loading washers / dryers with custom designed CBW facility
Automation -500KG p/h
Central Laundries
Although we can’t automate the loading of washers / dryers in small or medium laundries, we are able to automate flatwork ironing & towel folding, so recommend this as soon as possible to reduce labour costs.
An ironer with an automated feeder saves 1 person’s labour cost, when adding an automated folder, this saves another 2 people, cutting labour from 4 to 1 person. This often leads to a payback period of 2 to 4 years depending on production numbers.
A towel folder automates folding at 5 seconds per towel, along with sorting of up to 4 types of towels, simplifying production & allowing terry batch washing. Although these are capable of 1000 towels per hour, the medium number is 600 towels per hour & can be justified as early as 100 towels per hour or 800 towels per shift.
Rewash
Central Laundries
A small percentage of rewash is expected in all central laundries, with 5% being the maximum accepted by managers. Too achieve 0% rewash is unrealistic & trying to achieve this will lead to accelerated linen degradation, as chemistry needs to be dialled up to the moon, good for the chemical company if on drum rates & terrible for linen replacement cycles.
Recommendation is to request a per KG rate for production from your chemical supplier, which reduces your chemical bill & linen degradation, as they are motivated to reduce dosing, while keeping rewash levels low & the relationship honest.

Central Laundries
We will need to breach this down by production type & why our sales team ask this question first during the opportunity discovery.
Production below 500KG p/h
Our best selling washers to these customers are the 60KG & 120KG washers, which are loaded at 50 & 100KG respectively to improve mechanical action & wash results to minimise rewash. Seldomly do central laundries purchase dryers below 60KG. Per above, we recommend automating ironing & towel folding asap.
This customer will normally transition to 2 shifts & then move to the next stage as soon as fiscally possible.
Production above 500KG p/h
Our 68KG batch washer with 8 pockets is by far the most popular model sold globally, delivering an impressive 1020 KG per hour, however we have various capacities to suit the customers’ requirements, impacted by production / textile type / soil levels.
This customer will also transition to 2 shifts & then add a 2nd CBW once volumes justify.
The smaller 60 / 120 KG washers & 60KG dryers are still used in this stage, however mostly for rewash or separation requirements.
